There is a God...and his name is Hasselhoff

Germans, it seems to me, are known for three things: their beer, their efficiency and their inexplicable love for all things David Hasselhoff. Throughout my weeks in Berlin I have enjoyed the beer very much, been impressed with the efficiency of all things Deutsch, but only now, after a trip to the record store inside the Galleria Kaufhaus, can I truly say “Ich bin ein Berliner.”

I went to buy some CD’s of the German artists I always heard about in German class – Die Artzin, Nina Hagen, Fanta Vier, etc. – but spent a good amount of time wandering around until I found my little slice of heaven: a David Hasselhoff 2-CD set (with bonus DVD!) all for under 20 Euros. This piece of musical-gold features Hasselhoff performing – nay, improving – such classics as “Rhinestone Cowboy,” “Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head,” and “New York, New York.” I would write more, but I have a date with musical brilliance, so if you’ll excuse me, it’s Hasselhoff time. (Yes, I really did buy it).

I just stumbled across your blog, and I have two things to say. 1 - I am so jealous, I wish I had the opportunity to visit Germany. Maybe in a few years! 2 - Love for David Hasselhoff is odd, but once you see his music videos, you too will feel the love.

hi ;)
Why do all Americans think we love David Hasselhoff??? I don´t know anybody at all who likes his music!!! We met some guys from Bosten a couple of weeks ago and they thought exactly the same about Germans and David Hasselhoff! Where did you get that information from?? Do they teach that in school over there :) ? Enjoy the rest of your time in my beloved city :)

Hi, I just found your blog here, and it's great! I also have a similar type of blog because my dad recently got a job in Mannheim, about 5 hours south of Berlin so I'm also docmenting my "adventures" in Germany. I'm not as articulate as you, though, ;) but you might still find it interesting.

We moved here only about 3 days ago so there's not much yet, but I will be updating it daily when we start doing things. :)

Hi there! I got to your blog through the "VIP" list and I absolutely love it. I was also a student in Berlin some time ago ( like 10 years ago)and I guess I had similar experiences.Including David Halsselhoff... *Big Laugh* I guess Germany must be the only place in the world where you can get his music. ( if we can call it that). Keep on with the blog. It's great!

hi
just one correction i'd like to make, namely when JFK said those famous words 'ich bin ein Berliner'he was not apparently aware that the german say 'ich bin Berliner'... what he said was, loosely translated 'i am a chocolate covered and cream filled donut'. I'm thus confused as to which u are refering! By the way, i love your photo's.

hey I just stumbled across your site and it interested me because on August 14th, I'm leaving my home in PA to spend about ten months as an exchange student in Berlin. Reading about your adventures definitely makes me even more excited to explore the city (if that's possible...) i actually just got back from a two week trip to southern germany (bavaria, mostly munich, actually.) and austria... very cool.. very beautiful. but i can't wait to experience berlin.
have fun with the rest of your trip!
p.s. david hasselhoff is like a creepy cult leader over there... *shiver*

I really wonder, whoever told you that bullshit about David Hasselhoff and the Germans ... He may have had a couple of fans here dating back to the times when his stupid TV series was on, back in the 80's, but I don't think I ever knew anybody who would actually buy one of his records... only Americans seem to be painless enough to do that. I guess they just know in the record stores that every now and then an american tourist desperate for David Hasselhoff CD's will drop in and ask for the stuff so it's pure politeness for the sake of german-american friendship ...

Just a little note to tell you I have finished reading your SAS Blog, and boy, how I have enjoyed it! I made sure that I read it over a few days and not to rush through it, in order to fully appreciate the language used, the sense of humour and the sensitivity which you displayed in the things you talked about or photographed. Everyone likes to talk about the travels they've made. Some like to brag, some like to complain about the place or people for all the inconveniences they've encountered during their trips. You have an eye for beauty and the heart to appreciate things and situations even though they may not be in the best of light. What's the point of travelling, if it does not open your eyes and heart?
It's indeed a gift to be able to articulate your thoughts so eloquently and beautifully.
If you're not doing anything else after your studies, you'll at least make a good travel writer and photographer!

Budak,

I totally agree with cielo lindo regarding your SAS blog. It was very nice reading. I am totally jealous of your travels!

BTW, you may want to moderate your comments (at least for a little while) as people think that because they are posting on the web they have license to be rude...

Hi there Budak!

I didn't know that Germans are crazy about David Hasselhoff. lol I just saw him on tv in Jay Leno's show. Well, I am not a big fan but I remember him during his Knight Rider and Bay Watch days.

Hi Budak!
I really enjoyed reading your blog and I'm glad that you feel so good here in Germany! Although I already knew David Hasselhoff as driver of the ultimate cool car KID, I'm surprised to read that he is also singing! More and more I suppose, that the Germans are likely dreaming of a speaking car than from a singing Hasselhoff ;-)
Furthermore, I agree that the best beer comes from Germany, i.e. from Bavaria or Franconia (area around Bamberg or Nuremberg ^^) - though I'm not a big fan of this "liquid bread"…
I hope being able to read more stories about your time here and wish you a perfect "time to make friends" ;-)

Don't Hassel the Hoff!
the best hasselhoff i've seen is when he was in Dodgeball, screaming at the German Dodgeball team.

Budak - great blog. Budak in Berlin macam bahasa melayu! hehehe
